It’s the greatest honor to photograph a newborn just days after they have entered this world; It’s an even greater honor to be asked back to photograph their siblings! Big brother Sebastian was sweet with his new sister, Remy – he wanted to hold her hand and kiss her!
It was a beautiful day in San Francisco when I went to their Russian Hill home to photograph this family of four. I had been to this cool house when photographing mom pregnant and Sebastian as a newborn, so I was familiar with the space. I knew I wanted to work in mom and dad’s bedroom because the light is great and they have an awesome bed! I love photographing families on their bed as it’s a familiar and comfortable spot for the kids. Sebastian loved being right there with his parents. He especially loved flopping on the pillows…who doesn’t!?
The cool thing about photographing newborn babies in their home is that we can get very unique photographs within their space. Since I set up a studio in the home, I also got some amazing posed photographs just like I would at the studio!
Beautiful Avery was so much fun to chase around! I loved the Legion of Honor location for the clean lines and amazing light. I encourage clients to wear clothing with a pop of color when we photograph here to spice up the session.
She looks like royalty here at her palace!
This location is great for sessions where there is a chance of rain as we are completely covered.
I have a wonderful studio in Potrero Hill, San Francisco that I love to use for my newborn photo sessions. HOWEVER, I am also a newish mom of two little girls. I KNOW what it feels like during those first few days and weeks. I did not want to leave the house or my bedroom for that matter. That is why I offer in-home sessions at no additional cost to my clients. I loved working with this new mom, dad and fur-sibling at their beautiful home in San Francisco. It was raining HARD outside but they had such a wonderful set of windows to work with. Baby Sam was so sweet and adorably little. We did some set up photographs on the fur with him wrapped up. He loved to be cozy. Check out the natural look and feel of the photos of mom and dad. I love the mix of posed newborn photographs with natural moments with mom and dad.
What makes a location amazing for taking family photographs?
For me, there are 4 key elements: Lighting, Background, Variety and sometimes Iconography.
When I am working with a family with 2 small children, I love having a large space for the children to run and play. It is even more perfect when that space has consistent lighting.
I love to have a background with leading lines but also one that is not distracting. After all, the stars of the show are your family members and we want them to shine.
Within one location, I love to get a variety of looks so it is important to be able to work around the location. Using different angles and points of view help create the variety I want to offer in each family portrait session.
In San Francisco, iconography is a big part of many of the sessions I photograph. I mean, BIG, like Golden Gate Bridge big! So, often, we need a location that can showcase the GGB AND have the other 3 key elements as well.
For this sweet family of four, we chose the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. It is one of my favorite locations for family sessions.
Check out all of the fun place for the kids to run and hide. We played chase, peek-a-boo and hide-and-seek. It was so much fun! Mom and dad are in love with the photos! Mom said, “The photos are amazing! Thank you so much for doing such a great job… I am so happy we waited the location and the weather was perfect :)”
